Everglades Restoration:  Big news! The Speaker of the House and the Senate President have apparently reached an agreement on the reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee, though the funding mechanism is still unknown. Thank you for all your calls and emails! FWF and its allies have been supporting the reservoir which will diminish polluted discharges to our estuaries and help to rehydrate the Biscayne Bay, the Everglades and Florida Bay.

Conservation Land Funding: The Florida House and Senate are currently negotiating the 2017-2018 state budget, which will provide funding for the Florida Forever program.

Despite the overwhelming support of the Water and Land Legacy Constitutional Amendment in 2014, the Florida Forever program has received little to no funding. We, Florida’s voters, must call upon the legislative leadership and urge them to do the will of the people and increase funding for Florida Forever. Please see below on how you can TAKE ACTION.

Customary Use: Customary use is the doctrine which allows the public to enjoy our beaches from the high watermark (high tide) to the water. The Florida Wildlife Federation supports the right of all Floridians and visitors to access these valuable natural places, which are the backbone of our tourism-based economy. Unfortunately, House Bill 735 was amended on Monday with language that would undermine customary use. We are watching both the Senate and House to ensure this bad language does not make it into law.

Thank you,
Your FWF Legislative Advocacy Team
